When accident strikes
Just recently, 40-year-old Kevin Schar of Colorado Springs, Colorado died after getting involved in a three-vehicle collision one afternoon. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Schar’s motorcycle collided with the pickup truck of 73-year-old Juditch McKay near the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Deer Creek road. The report said that McKay’s truck crossed the center line and collided with Schar’s bike that had the 40-year-old thrown from his motorcycle before it catches fire. In the process, McKay also struck an SUV driven by 40-year-old Rafael Melchor of Oxnard.
Schar died immediately while McKay was rushed to the hospital by another private vehicle. She is believed to have suffered from minor injuries. Currently, the officials are still conducting an investigation to help determine the real cause of the accident.
Why are motorcycles more dangerous than cars?
Motorcycles are fairly safe to use. However, there are tons of different factors that could make it seem unsafe to use, at least comparing it to cars. Because of its small size, there are very minimal crash protection systems that can help protect its riders. Just like what happened to Schar who was violently thrown out from his bike, motorcycle riders are much more exposed to the dangers and could get easily injured or killed in the event of a collision.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has recently conducted a study about the probability of accidents happening depending on the mode of transportation that one uses. Basing from the accident reports that has been recorded in 2007, the agency found out that one person is at a greater risk of getting injured or dying if he or she is riding a motorcycle. The report revealed that motorcyclists are 37 times more likely to die in a motor vehicle accident compared to someone that rides an automobile. Additionally, the report revealed that a motorcycle rider is 9 times more likely to be injured compared to those who ride and drive cars.
This makes biking really a dangerous hobby. According to a Los Angeles motorcycle attorney, a good number of the claims he has handled had motorcyclists badly injured or even dead. According to him, it helps for people who want to file claims that hiring a Los Angeles lawyer who knows the laws of the state so you can have better chances of succeeding with your claims.
